So you’ve started a blog. You’re motivated during the first few weeks, but now you start to notice that it isn’t attracting much attention. Are you getting enough hits? Does no-one seem to care about your opinions? The problem could be that people are in fact searching for information on the topic that you are writing about, but your blog isn’t appearing on the first few pages of Google.

Tailor your topic

It’s no exact science but a well researched and deliberate approach to blogging will go a long way towards extending its readership and popularity. Your first step, once you’ve decided on your topic, is researching keywords. Use keyword research to see what people are searching for on the internet, comparing topics to each other and using it to measure what is popular and trendy at that time. Check out the popular news sites regarding your topic and see what the latest discussions are on forums etc. Perhaps you’ll discover that your area of interest is more popular in some areas than others. You could always tailor your subject to be more locally relevant to certain areas.

Not only are keywords your best friend when writing, but so are related keywords. Keep an eye out in your research for commonly used terminology that an internet browser would search for. Inculcate these into your articles where relevant. Related markets as well could be handy, as more often than not your reader will have interests in and around this topic. Targeting these internet users and directing them to your own articles is how you will generate more traffic and leads from your blog.

One of the most beneficial things you can do for your blog is to segment your audience and speak to their needs. You can then accurately craft content that will not only be easy to find on search engines, but also engages with your readers and keeps them coming back for more. With the tools outline above, it’s only a matter of time before you have streams of traffic to your site or blog.
