Twitter is a social media micro-blogging channel and it is quite different to the other social media marketing channels available. Usually, when people first use it, it can seem confusing and a bit overwhelming. How can you get your message across in 140 characters? The truth is…you can!

One of the first things we advise our clients on Twitter is getting familiar with how it works and what you can do with it. Add an image to your profile, find others to follow that you are interested in, and tweet some updates.  This could include a link to an article you have read, or what you are doing right this moment.

Once you have observed how Twitter works and you have participated a bit on this network, there are a couple of things you can do to build relationships and your network. Why is this important? People like to do business with people that they like, trust and know. Here are a couple of tips that you can use to build up your network on Twitter.

Twitter networking tips

Provide value: Share interesting information such as news items, answer questions and offer advice. Go with a balance of about 90% non-promotional tweets and 10% promotional tweets. When you are sharing something on Twitter, it shouldn’t just be about yourself and your services or products.

Engaging: Ask other people questions by including the @ symbol followed by their name to spark a conversation. This can also help people get to know you, but it can also be a good chance for you to demonstrate your expertise. You don’t need to outright sell to let others know that you can offer value to them. Before you know it, others will be sharing your information with their network, helping you to strengthen your network in the process.

On your Twitter profile you don’t have a lot of space to add a full description of what you do, only include a small blurp on the important things with a link back to your website or your blog.  This is a good way for other people to find out more information about what you do and who you are.

Twitter is a smart social media channel to listen, respond and be helpful. With Twitter, you can build a reputation for yourself and strengthen your relationship every time you engage with people.
