There are a few common, unnecessary errors that web designers repeat which cause their efforts toward creating a great website, to be futile. Creating a great website can be achieved by following a few simple rules.

Good web designing:

  • Text and graphics in a web site is big and bold – a glimpse of a website should be enough to grasp the core of an organisations undertakings. Remember that informative text should be smaller so that it can easily be distinguished from headings and can be absorbed quicker.
  • Navigation must be consistent – it is always a good idea to indicate to a viewer where they are in the website so that they do not become ‘virtually lost’. Thus, navigational bars must me consistent throughout the website with common easy to use and understand buttons.
  • Links should make sense – the links one puts up on a website should make logical sense and also portray to a viewer where they are heading on this virtual information journey.
  • Buttons and links are user friendly – Buttons should consist of single keywords, avoid using sentences in buttons as the average attention span is relatively short and the loss of attention can cause defection to another organisation or brand.
  • Every page of the website has some relation to the home page so that one perceives them to be a family of pages.

If one can conquer these simplistic aspects, creating a good website should be easy. Things a web designer should avoid:

  • Unnecessary windows and use of buttons – this makes the website feel of lower quality and that the organisation puts extra, unneeded functions on their website to compensate for lack in service.
  • Inconsistency – if the text links are in blue on the home page, don’t change the colour on every sub page, because this could be confusing. Try to keep the basics of the website as similar as possible!
