Last year I made a commitment to myself – looking for a new career. I decided that I will focus on speaking, training and consulting in the Digital space.
I joined the Professional Speakers Association of South Africa in October and started volunteering to speak at every opportunity. Being a speaker can be hard work and I have already learned from some of South Africa’s greatest speakers, like Stef Du Plessis. He presented a couple of months ago and the one-thing he said that stuck in my mind was “80% of the time, speakers speak for nothing, and 20% of the time they get paid”. He went on to say that the 80% is the experience that you earn as a speaker. He also said “speak whenever you can, even at old age home, as practice is most important.” So Here I go earning my 80% experience as quick as possible.

My good friends Eli & Wendy Biksen from Jupiter, Florida, have just launched a new website for Haifa Limestone and I had the pleasure of brain storming with them on the development of this new website in the limestone industry.
The first thing we did was to conduct a competitor analysis on the major the Limestone suppliers in the United States.
If you are going to build a new website then you may as well do it right and plan your strategy upfront for the keywords and content you should use to ensure that you can dominate the search results for limestone related keywords.
We analyzed the limestone industry for the following:
✓ Their Google PPC activity, keywords and best performing Ads;
✓ The Top 20 Google results for all competitors to identify what their strategy is and to ensure we select the best keywords without wasting time;
✓ The number of back-links using limestone related keyword phrases. This shows us their strategy;
✓ Their social media footprint/reach in social networks like, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Flickr & YouTube. A great way to listen to what’s going on.
After analyzing all the above information we are able to present the data in a simple one page chart as below.
- The further along the X axis one is, the better their search visibility;
- The further along the Y axis, the more socially relevant they are;
- The size of the bubble determines the amount of content – this way we know if they are using inbound marketing techniques
We can see where Haifa Limestone is positioned against their competitors and we know exactly what to do, in which order and how much it’s going to cost.
And better still, when we re-evaluate in 3 months time we should see the progress that we make as well as keep an eye on the competition and their moves.

The next task we did was to identify the Top 100 keyword phrases we are going to target and sorted them into strength of competition.
We do this to identify which “low hanging” keywords we should target first so that we can show results within the first two months.
So we concentrate on the Light and Moderate (competitive) keywords first.

It is with great excitement that I announce being accepted into the Professional Speakers Association of Southern Africa. My friend Jacques De Villiers, a professional sales trainer and motivational speaker has been urging me to join for a year now, as we have been on the speaking stage together a few times.
As many of you know I have been speaking at many events all over the world and have enjoyed the opportunity to travel that speaking and training has brought into my life.
My talks are all focused on my specialty which is digital and social media marketing. In addition to speaking I have held numerous training sessions over the past two years in 6 different countries and have trained over 450 Internet Consultants who own WSI Internet Marketing franchises.
As a mentor and trainer, I teach people key principles of Internet Marketing and how to create “virtual reality” from the business reality of today.
Professional speaking is something that has been on the top of my to do list ever since I met Technology guru Scott Klososky. I attended a number of his keynote presentations and social media bootcamps and consider him as a role model for me.
In the next couple of months I will be developing a number of keynote talks on the subject of social media and if any of my readers know of a company that would like to hear a new speaker on the block, I would appreciate the referral.

It was a hard week for me as I presented 2 days training in Monterrey City and 2 days in Mexico City.
We had 65 WSI Internet Marketing Consultants (ICs) attend and I did the training without an interpreter. It went really well with everyone being happy that they could understand my English and South African accent.
I love visiting Mexico as they always make Marianna & I feel so welcome. From the moment we arrive, they fetch us from the airport, take us touring and shopping. Then in the evenings we go out to a great local restaurant.

This is my company blog but I thought I would post my experience I had yesterday while making my way to Cancun after training in Mexico City.
I arrived at Cancun airport and was making my way to the arranged transport I had organised. I always do this when traveling in a strange country where I don’t understand the language. We arrived at terminal 2 only to find out we had to go to terminal 3 for our ride. On the way a travel agent official (with ID badge) stopped us to help. He said it would be 20 minutes to get to terminal 3. He called our transport on the phone number I gave him. After speaking in Spanish to the guy he handed me the phone. The person on the other side said that their transport was going to be late, about 2 hours as there was an accident and the road was blocked. He said I should catch a taxi and hand the receipt to the hotel when I got there. The “nice” agent then offered to arrange the taxi. I was suspicious and said that I was not sure. I asked to see the phone number that he called on his cell and it was the same as I gave him. But I didnt see that he had probably phoned another number. Anyway long story short we went in a “taxi” it had the certification stickers on. They wanted me to pay $80 before left. I said no and they said OK. The driver only spoke Spanish so we couldn’t communicate. He was going in the opposite direction to the hotel so we started to get worried. I told him to stop and we showed him on the map where we need to be. We got to the hotel safely. There were no accidents on the road, it was just a scam to get me to use their transport. At the hotel I get the concierge to discuss this with the driver but we got nowhere. I was concerned we would be charged twice for the transport.
It ended ok, but never again will I deviate from the plan. I should have made my way to terminal 3.
I thought I would share this with you, especially as a warning to those who travel.
