Social selling isn’t about sending out a bunch of spammy links on Twitter to get unsuspecting users to click on your links. It’s all about engaging online, building a community and listening for trigger words that you can use to sell. Here are a few tips we’ve picked up along the way to help any social selling strategy:

Do: Be a trusted advisor

People want to receive information from someone they trust. In today’s digital era, educating a potential client is basically the same as selling. Give good advice and make sure you’re sharing valuable content online. People only follow people who add value on social media, so don’t use this platform to push one-way PR messages.

Do: Be authentic

There’s nothing wrong with hiring a social media consultant to manage your brand (or your personal) profiles for you, but make sure they are being authentic. You need to humanise your brand and you can only do this if you have a consistent voice on social media.

Don’t: Talk about yourself 24/7

Real, authentic and successful social media profiles don’t churn out messages about their brand or company 24/7. Stay on top of latest trends in the industry, comment on newsworthy topics and share information about things other than your business as well.

Don’t: Push products without building a relationship first

If you’re monitoring your social media networks and pick up on trigger words, then you need to act on them. The wrong thing to do, however, is bombard potential leads with sales pitches. Establish a relationship with the person before you start mentioning how your product or service can help them.
